Perspective
I have a journal in which I record "balanced thoughts." I originate
these thoughts through a cogitive exercise known as "thought
records." I use this exercise when I feel I am being triggered into
various challenging emotional states, such as anxiety or self-blame or
self-doubt (which for me can be extreme at times). The exercise involves a few steps, and culminates in an alternative balanced thought which then helps calm the challenging
emotional state and helps to change damaging core beliefs. The exercise doesn't deny the emotional state. Rather it helps me label the emotion, see facts surrounding a trigger, recognize and label distorted thoughts/thinking patterns, and then help regulate the emotion (if it needs such). I learned this exercise from various mental health books and with the help of professional counseling.
Three examples of balanced thoughts in regard to feeling I'm not making
progress or gaining wellness:
"Some of my issues resurface, and I continue to make headway with
insights and actions."
"It is understandable that I am confused about some of my feelings,
and I am gaining clarity."
"I do fall down, and I've always gotten back up. Change is possible
at any moment."
