John M. Knapp, LMSW

I'm a therapist specializing in recovery from toxic groups, abusive churches & cults. I'm also a 23-year veteran of Transcendental Meditation. Have you been diagnosed with a mental illness? It's possible it was a mistake. After I left in 1995, I had diagnoses thrown at me -- everything from personality disorder to bipolarity! Fortunately, these were misdiagnoses because, as you may know, people don't really recover from such problems but rather learn to accommodate. As it turns out, many people suffering trauma, particularly PTSD, are misdiagnosed. It appears the extreme anxiety and other trauma effects cause mood swings, paranoid thinking, difficulties with intimacy and interpersonal skills, and other symptoms that lead to misdiagnosis. These are not signs of "mental illness" but rather normal, natural, human responses to overwhelming stress. I'm proud to say after working with a therapist who understood, my "symptoms" evaporated. The good news for you? Even if you've been diagnosed with mental illness, you may have a happy, comfortable, productive, and fulfilling life awaiting you!
